The next International AIDS Conference will be held in Washington D.C. in 2012, the birthplace of the war on drugs. Before that meeting, supporters of the Vienna Declaration will be seeking support and endorsements from governments and policy makers around the world.
It is our hope that policymakers will assess the large scientific evidence base on drug policy and choose to advocate for the health of drug users – rather than for the increased levels of HIV infections, imprisonment, and stigmatization that accompany prohibition-based policy approaches.
This summary report reviews the breadth of support the Declaration has seen to date and outlines ways that the general public and policymakers alike can show their support and strengthen calls for evidence-based drug policies.
